Lidar Measurements of the Volcanic Dust Cloud

This web page contains plots acquired from University of Manchester LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) systems. These lidars are deployed around the United Kingdom to measure aerosol and other properties of the atmosphere. Data is shown of dust detected in the atmosphere after the eruption of the Icelandic volcano started. The page will be updated as new data becomes available.

The following calendar shows available days:

Leosphere EZ Lidar (University of Manchester)

The Leosphere Aerosol Lidar operates at a wavelength of 355nm and is used to measure the height of cloud and aerosol layers. It is portable and so has been deployed at several locations:

Elight Aerosol and Ozone Lidar (FGAM/NCAS/University of Manchester)

The Elight Ozone and Aerosol Lidar measures both ozone and aerosol, but only aerosol is shown here. It also operates at 355nm as well as four other ultraviolet wavelengths. The plots on this website were obtained from data collected at the MST radar facility at Capel Dewi east of Aberystwyth.

Water Vapour Lidar (University of Manchester)

The water vapour lidar is also based at the MST Radar Facility near Aberystwyth and uses a wavelength of 355nm. This so-called Raman lidar can obtain aerosol backscatter information all day and at night it can obtain additional information on water vapour profiles. The plots shown here are mainly night time profiles of backscatter and water vapour.
